I talk about bitcoin a lot and lately I've found that a lot of people know about it, but it seems to be a generational thing. Bitcoin much more easily reaches younger people. That being said, you shouldn't assume that everyone already knows about bitcoin or understands even the very basic ideas behind why we need such a thing.
I've introduced bitcoin to a lot of people and generally I don't tell them to invest. I tell them a little bit about why I'm excited about it and I explain to them its properties and inner workings to the extent I understand them and to the extent that my listener doesn't lose interest.
