Zenith Launches Retro Defy Diver

Retro styling, bigger.

The heavy Zenith Defy Extreme Diver, water-resistant to 600 meters, is based on the 1969 Defy A3648. It's a distinct styling resemblance to the vintage original, but the Extreme Diver's construction and specs are more modern. The case is titanium, and the bezel is black ceramic. Originally available in black or blue, the Extreme Diver now features a silver dial, while retaining the iconic bright orange flange.

Zenith's catalog includes several sports watches, including the Chronomaster Sport, but the Defy Extreme Diver is undoubtedly the most uniquely designed. Tracing its historical roots back to the vintage Defy A3648, the Extreme Diver is equally unique. While the watch retains most of the vintage design elements, including the angular case and 14-sided inner bezel, it also looks very modern.

The Extreme Defy is one of Zenith's pricier chronograph and date watches at CHF 10,900, but it's still a reasonable value choice considering the movement inside and the overall build quality.

The Extreme Diver has the same 600m water resistance rating as the classic A3648, and the case is brushed titanium, 42.5mm in diameter and 15.5mm thick. The signature 14-sided inner bezel is surrounded by a unidirectional black ceramic bezel with a fluted edge for grip. A large titanium crown guard protects the fluted screw-down crown at 3 o'clock.

The dial is silvery white with a sunburst brushed finish. Like other Defy models, the dial is adorned with a repeating four-pointed star pattern.

Like the vintage A3648, the hands and dial are accented in bright orange. The bezel markings, applied hour markers and all three hands are filled with Super-LumiNova to ensure clear visibility in dark conditions.

The watch is equipped with the El Primero 3620 SC movement, which provides a 60-hour power reserve and beats at a frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour (5 Hz). The high-frequency movement is derived from the El Primero 3600, the brand's flagship chronograph movement. Through the open caseback, the 3620 SC is equipped with a star-shaped satin-finished rotor.
