Though you might get lucky, I won't really recommend mining alone. You are competing against other miners in a mining pool and you can only get the reward if you're the first to solve the puzzle. Mining alone would cost you greatly (electricity and hardware).

Correct. I mine Bitcoin almost every day in a mining pool, but only for 30 minutes. Doing it alone is a lot to do.
