Market Update – Eyes on ECB!

US inflation data supported bets for a rate cut from the Fed next week, but also argued for gradual moves.

      Asia & European Sessions:

*Selling initially drove the moves on Wall Street and Treasuries as the pick up in the monthly US CPI core rate weighed on aggressive Fed rate cut bets, and basically confirmed a -25 bp reduction next week. However global equities turned around and dip buyers provided support with the major indexes bouncing off of support.
*European stock markets are broadly higher in catch up trade, after Wall Street turned optimistic yesterday and the tech rally extended through Asian hours. Japanese markets, which were hit by a rally in the yen earlier in the week, bounced back and the Nikkei closed 3.4% higher. DAX and FTSE100 are currently up 1.2% as markets wait for the ECB to deliver the widely expected 25 bp rate cut.
*Tech stocks like Amazon, Microsoft, and Nvidia drove Wall Street’s gains, pushing the S&P 500 and Nasdaq higher.
*ECB Preview: Comments from officials have left little doubt that rates will be cut by 25 bp once again at tomorrow’s meeting. It is likely to be another “cautious cut”, however, that doesn’t commit to additional moves. Growth indicators may have come in lower than hoped, and headline inflation dropped sharply. Underlying inflation, though, remains high and that means Lagarde is likely to stick with a data-dependent approach. We expect further cuts, but for now only at meetings with updated staff projections. A 25 bp cut would leave the deposit rate at 3.50% and the main refinancing rate at 4.00%. However, the ECB announced earlier in the year that it intends to lower the spread between the deposit rate and the main refinancing rate to 15 bp from currently 25 bp. That will come into effect on September 18, together with the changes announced tomorrow. That will leave the main refinancing rate at 3.65%, the marginal lending rate at 3.90%.

      Financial Markets Performance:

*The USDIndex is at 101.796 and USDJPY has lifted to 142.66 amid a wider correction in the Yen.
*Oil rebounded 2.19% to $67.80 per barrel due to Hurricane Francine affecting Gulf of Mexico production.
*Gold dipped -0.15% to $2512.89 per ounce after rising to a session high of $2528.98 per ounce.

Oil bets most Bullish in 2 Years, Stocks pared some gains.

      Trading Leveraged Products is risky

The September NFP report was a blowout by almost every measure. It quickly knocked out lingering fears of a recession this year or early next, but also knocked out expectations for another jumbo -50 bp rate cut this year. So, what’s the market signaling right now? ‘Goldilocks’ scenario?

      Asia & European Sessions:

*Equity markets have moved broadly higher across Asia, and European markets are also finding buyers in early trade. Recent US data have boosted growth optimism, and Chinese officials seem more committed to growth boosting stimulus measures.
*Japanese stocks closed higher on Monday, with the Nikkei rising by 2.05%, driven by gains in the Mining, Chemical, Petroleum & Plastic, and Power sectors.
*European equities continue to benefit from a positive US jobs report. The DAX and FTSE 100 have already started to pare opening gains and the DAX is down -0.1%, while the FTSE 100 up a mere 0.04%.
*Data:German manufacturing orders plunged -3.8% m/m in August & U.K. house prices rose 0.3% m/m in September, according to the Halifax index. German data added to signs that the German economy will contract again this year.
*This Week: The inflation data are in view and will have a little more importance as the jobs report has extinguished fears of a recession and boosted the potential for a pick up in price pressures ahead. We expect gains of 0.1% and 0.2% for headline and core CPI for September (Thursday). Increases of 0.1% and 0.2% are projected for September PPI (Friday). Along with the data, there is a host of Fedspeakers through the week and the FOMC minutes (Wednesday). Supply is also on tap with the Treasury selling $119 bln in 3-, 10-, and 30-year maturities.
*Earnings season looms: JPMorgan Chase is scheduled to report on Friday, with PepsiCo in the spotlight tomorrow and Delta Air Lines on Thursday.

      Financial Markets Performance:

*The USDIndex traded within Friday’s range so far today and is at 102.32.
*The USDJPY surged to test 149.00 immediately after the data before drifting down to 148.80. Still, this is the strongest since July and early August were the pair hit a multidecade peak at 161.69 on July 3. Currebntly is at 148.13
*According to Bloomberg, Oil futures posted their largest gain in more than a year last week. USOILhas lifted to $74.63 per barrel as markets watch developments in the Middle East. Gold meanwhile is at USD 2649.19 per ounce.

XAGUSD: Increased retail demand sends silver prices soaring

      Trading Leveraged Products is risky

Silver maintained its recent gains to around $34.8 per ounce on Tuesday, holding at its highest level in nearly 12 years as uncertainty surrounding the US election, Middle East tensions and bets on further monetary easing fuelled safe-haven demand for the precious metal.

Expectations of stronger industrial demand for silver, which is a key component used in solar panels, as the world shifts to cleaner energy, also boosted prices. In addition, top metals consumer China has recently introduced a series of stimulus measures to revive economic growth. Earlier this week, the People’s Bank of China cut its one- and five-year lending rates by 25 basis points to 3.1% and 3.6% respectively. On Friday, the PBOC also moved to support Chinese equity markets and announced that it may lower bank reserve requirements again before the year ends.

The main catalyst behind the recent rally has been rising retail demand for silver, which has become an attractive asset for investors seeking protection against ongoing changes in monetary policy.

As global central banks signal a shift towards a more accommodative stance, investors are increasingly looking at silver as a cost-effective hedge against inflation and currency devaluation. This trend is particularly evident in the context of silver’s price performance relative to gold.

While gold recently reached a record high of $2,748 per ounce, silver is still well below its all-time high of $49.78, reached in April 2011, indicating further appreciation potential. Investor sentiment has also been supported by recent developments in China, where authorities have imposed aggressive monetary measures aimed at revitalising the economy. These measures are expected to stimulate economic activity, which is likely to boost actual demand for silver and other industrial metals in the coming months.

Demand for gold and silver as a store of value was also strong, due to expectations that whoever wins the US presidential election next month, fiscal spending will rise and increase the budget deficit. Moreover, dovish comments from ECB President Lagarde on Tuesday were bullish for the precious metal, when she said the direction of interest rate movements in the Eurozone is clear.

From a technical perspective, XAGUSD has successfully broken the resistance line of the bullish pennant pattern, confirming the positive implications of this technical setup. The current bullish trajectory suggests that silver could reach the FE100% projection level of $36 from the $11.63 – $30.07 and $17.b54 drawdowns. The move above the 52-week EMA informs that the ongoing bullish trend might last even longer, as long as the $32.49 resistance that is now switching to function as support holds. Given the current dynamics, the outlook for silver is still bullish.

The possibility of a short-term correction, however, remains valid due to profit-taking.

S&P 500 Earnings: Analysts Predict Walmart Will Outperform.

      Trading Leveraged Products is risky

*The Great British Pound retraces upwards breaking the Dollar’s seven-day winning streak.
*Meta stocks continue to fall after the European Commission imposes a fine of 797 million Euros due to unfair conditions.
*Susan Collins, the chairperson of the Federal Reserve of Boston, said that a 0.25% rate cut could be considered in December, but it depends on forthcoming economic data.
*The Federal Reserve indicates a rate cut would depend fully on November’s NFP and inflation rate.

GBPUSD – Lack of Confidence In The Great British Pound!

The GBPUSD ended the day 0.45% higher, mainly gaining momentum within the US trading session. According to technical analysts, the decline was largely due to a break in the US Dollar’s trend but also investors temporarily purchasing the significant dip in the exchange rate. However, in order for the bullish price movement to maintain its upward momentum it is important for the GBP to obtain support from a further price driver.

When looking at technical analysis, even with the upward price movement which rose to yesterday’s mentioned targets, the price continues to move in line with bearish trend theories. In order to break out of the pattern, the GBPUSD will need to push higher than the 1.27210 level. However, this would require Dollar weakness as well as investor confidence in the GBP returning. Investors’ confidence in the GBP has taken a dip since the UK Autumn Budget and fear of possible Trump US-UK tariffs. Technical indicators pointing towards a potential further rise are likely to arise if the GBPUSD increases above 1.26791.

Investors are scrutinizing recent US Federal Reserve comments, adding uncertainty to future actions. Before the election, experts expected continued rate cuts, but Donald Trump’s victory and plans for tax cuts and higher import duties have reduced this likelihood. According to analysts, a reduction in the Fed’s Fund Rate will primarily depend on November’s employment and inflation data. The Fed will particularly wish to see inflation fall in order to cut a further 0.25%. Yesterday, the CME Fed-Watch tool illustrated a 65% chance of a cut. Today the possibility of a cut has fallen to 58%.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell stated there’s no urgency to lower rates, while Boston Fed Chair Susan Collins suggested a possible December cut of 25 basis points, depending on data. In contrast, Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee hinted at further reductions, totaling 125 basis points by 2025.

USA500 – Investors Expect Walmart to Beat Earnings Expectations!

The US stock market on Monday was a day of two halves and did not point towards a clear trend. Nonetheless, the downward price movement clearly lost momentum. The reason for the downward trend was primarily due to the higher inflation rate and lower possibility of another interest rate cut in December. However, certain news from individual companies also pressured the index.

Alphabet continues to come under pressure from the DOJ to sell Chrome in its search to crack down on Google’s monopoly. In addition to this, Meta came under pressure as the EU imposes another fine of 797M Euros.

However, investors are hoping the sentiment towards US companies and stocks will change with the release of Walmart’s quarterly earnings report this morning and NVIDIA’s tomorrow evening. Of the SNP’s 500 components, Walmart is the 21st most influential stock, while NVIDIA is the most influential holding a weight of 7.03%. If both reports are better than expectations, the SNP500 may outperform both the NASDAQ and Dow Jones.

Walmart has beat their earnings expectations over the past 3 quarters. Investors are expecting a slightly lower revenue and earnings per share this quarter. However, if higher than expected, the stock is likely to rise further. Investors are anticipating the earnings to beat expectations, hence why the stock is trading 1.61% higher during this morning’s pre-trading hours. So far this year, the stock has risen 59%.

French Government Collapses as ECB Signals Another Rate Cut!

      Trading Leveraged Producys is Risky

*The French government collapses after a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Michel Barnier. The French government has not collapsed like this in 62 years!
*Economists warn of potential Euro weakness due to ongoing political uncertainty in France and Germany. To pile on the pressure, analysts expect the ECB to cut rates on the 12th.
*US and European indices continue to rise to all-time highs. NASDAQ +1.24%, Dow Jones +0.69%, DAX +1.08% and the CAC40 +0.66%.
*The Federal Reserve Chairman advises the US economy is in a “remarkably good shape”.

EURUSD – Will The EURUSD Find Resistance at 1.05417?

The EURUSD continues to move within the price range between 1.04714 and 1.05417 established over the past 3 days. During this morning’s Asian session the EURUSD moved upwards towards 1.05417 due to the decline in the US Dollar Index. The US Dollar Index traded 0.19% lower this morning but is at the 106.04 support level. Is the EURUSD likely to regain bearish momentum in favor of the USD?

Currently, the exchange rate is not obtaining any clear indications pointing towards bearish price movement. However, as the EURUSD rises to the 1.05417 resistance level, traders will monitor if this price will trigger bearishness throughout the European session which is due to open soon. In order for there to be clearer indications of the EURUSD’s possible decline, traders will be looking for 65% of the current bullish to be regained. This level can be seen at 1.05163, or for the price to fall below the 200-bar Simple Moving Average on the 5-minute timeframe.

      European Instability & Political Crisis

Analysts believe the price of the EURUSD is likely to decline in the medium to longer term. This is due to the political crisis in France, Germany as well as the potentially upcoming interest rate cut by the European Central Bank. The French government collapses following a vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Michel Barnier, marking the first such event in 62 years! Germany will also hold snap elections in February 2025.

Pressure on the Euro increases after the ECB President MrsLagarde highlighted the region’s economic weakness and declining services sector activity. Croatian National Bank Governor Mr Vujičić said the ECB’s plan to continue cutting interest rates but with smaller gradual cuts. Analysts widely expect a fourth rate adjustment amid deteriorating European business sentiment, though only 20% foresee a 50 basis point cut. Vujičić also warned of growing uncertainty as the ECB adopts more flexible policies, with recent economic data aligning with forecasts, except for November’s inflation, which rose to 2.3% year-on-year due to lingering energy price impacts.

US Economic Strength and Fed Potential Hawkishness

On the other hand, the tone in the US is very different. The Federal Reserve Chairman advises the US economy is in a “remarkably good shape”. After Mr Powell’s speech yesterday evening analysts advised the Chairman had a slightly hawkish tone, but nonetheless, 77.5% of the market believe the Fed will cut 0.25%. If the Fed surprises the market as they did in September, the US Dollar can quickly regain momentum.

The weakness seen during yesterday’s US session and this morning’s Asian session was largely due to the ADP Employment Change and the ISM Services PMI. The ISM Services PMI fell short of expectations, reading 52.1 points. The ADP Employment Change read 146,000, very close to the average expectation of 153,00.

European Stocks Dip, Yen Hits Lows, Bitcoin Surges Over $102K Amid Market Shifts.

      Trading Leveraged Producys is Risky

      Asia & European Sessions:

*European stocks are set to open lower, with Euro Stoxx 50 futures down 0.5%, reflecting caution ahead of key economic releases, including eurozone inflation and US job openings data.
*US futures also edged lower, contrasting with modest gains in Asian markets driven by strength in chip-related stocks. The surge in semiconductor shares followed Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's announcement of new products, reigniting optimism around AI demand.
*Tencent shares plunged by as much as 8%, while battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology dropped over 6% after being labeled a military-linked entity by the Pentagon.
*Market sentiment remains clouded by geopolitical concerns. Traders are digesting rising trade tensions after Donald Trump refuted reports suggesting he would ease tariffs if he returns to the White House. Washington's decision to blacklist several Chinese companies, including tech giant Tencent Holdings, has further strained U.S.-China relations, adding pressure on China’s already slowing economy.
*Japanese Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato issued a warning about "excessive moves" in the yen, suggesting potential intervention to stabilize the currency. The Yen slumped to its weakest level since July, underperforming all major currencies, as Japanese retail investor outflows and the Tokyo benchmark fixing drove the decline. Meanwhile, the selling through the Nippon Individual Savings Account (NISA) and trend-following dollar buying could be a key factors behind the Yen’s drop.
*Justin Trudeau has announced he will resign as Canada's prime minister and as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.

      Financial Markets Performance:

*The US Dollar dip to 107.85 from 109.60 highs, after Trump’s denial.
*The EURUSD rebounded to 1.0413, the GBPUSD rallied to 1.2550.
*The USDJPY fell to 158.42 against the dollar before paring losses to 157.73 by mid-afternoon in Tokyo. The Yen’s performance could be further impacted by US data, particularly Friday’s jobs report. A stronger-than-expected figure may push back expectations for US rate cuts, potentially driving the USDJPY pair to 159.
*Oil prices steadied after dipping for the first time in 6 sessions, with technical indicators suggesting the recent rally may have been overextended.
*Bitcoin surpassed the $102,600 mark, signaling growing confidence in digital assets. A CoinShares report highlighted over $500 million in Bitcoin ETF investments in the year’s first three trading days. MicroStrategy added to the bullish momentum with its ninth consecutive Bitcoin purchase, acquiring another $100 million. The company now holds nearly $45 billion in Bitcoin, and its stock has surged alongside the crypto's rebound — potentially paving the way for further share issuances to fund additional Bitcoin buys. The macroeconomic backdrop remains a key driver for crypto markets. Rumors of a rollback on Trump-era tariffs have caused the USD to weaken, adding volatility to global markets. Bitcoin’s recent price moves reflect this, with traders watching the dollar index closely for cues.

Stock Market Drops as US-China Trade War Escalates; Gold Hits Record High.

Futures for US and European stocks retreated, shrugging off gains in Asian markets as investors assessed the latest earnings from Wall Street tech giants and growing concerns over the US-China trade war.

Gold prices soared to an all-time high, continuing a nearly 1% rally from the previous session, as escalating trade tensions drove demand for safe-haven assets.

      Global Stock Market Performance

      * Euro Stoxx 50 futures declined 0.4%, while S&P 500 futures slipped 0.5%, weighed down by post-market declines in Alphabet Inc. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc.
      * Asian stock markets advanced for a second straight session, though Chinese equities fell as the market reopened after the Lunar New Year holiday.
      * The yen strengthened against the US dollar, while gold surged on increased risk aversion.

Tech Stocks and Trade War Concerns

Asian technology stocks mirrored their US counterparts’ gains, but investor sentiment toward China remained cautious. Markets reacted to Beijing’s swift but measured retaliation after the US imposed a 10% tariff on all imports from China. Compared to the aggressive tit-for-tat measures during Trump’s first term, President Xi Jinping appears to be taking a more calculated approach.

US Jobs Report and Federal Reserve Rate Policy

      * The US 10-year Treasury yield declined alongside the US dollar index, after data revealed a larger-than-expected drop in job openings for December, hitting a three-month low.
      * The weaker US labour market data reduced fears of aggressive Federal Reserve rate hikes, pushing the US dollar lower and creating a favourable setup for Asian markets.
      * Investors now turn to the US ISM services report for further clues on the Fed’s rate policy, with analysts expecting a slowdown in activity due to winter storms and wildfires.

Trump Signals No Urgency for US-China Trade Talks

President Donald Trump told reporters he’s in no rush to negotiate with Chinese President Xi Jinping, stating that he’ll engage in discussions “at the appropriate time.”

Market analysts are concerned that prolonged uncertainty over trade negotiations could lead to increased stock market volatility, especially in China. Despite the delays in trade talks, Trump has shown that he is willing to negotiate, so markets will continue to watch closely.

In a surprising move, the US Postal Service temporarily suspended international shipments from China and Hong Kong. While the reason remains unclear, the suspension follows Trump’s repeal of the de minimis rule, which previously allowed small Chinese shipments under $800 to enter the US duty-free.

US-China trade tensions remain a major market risk and if both sides delay their tariff measures, markets will respond positively, but further escalation could trigger renewed volatility.

Gold Prices Surge as Investors Seek Safe Havens

      * Gold prices skyrocketed to a record high of $2,861 an ounce, fueled by concerns over trade disputes, geopolitical instability, and potential inflation risks.
      * Beijing’s measured response to US tariffs was notably softer than its previous retaliatory actions, yet investors remain cautious about its long-term effects on global trade and monetary policy.
      * Adding to market uncertainty, Trump proposed a US-led reconstruction plan for Gaza, further fueling demand for safe-haven assets like gold.
The gold market is benefiting from rising geopolitical risks, including US-China trade uncertainty and tensions in the Middle East. Regardless of US dollar movements, gold demand remains strong.

US Dollar Weakens Amid Market Uncertainty

      * The US dollar continued to weaken, extending Tuesday’s 0.7% drop following disappointing US jobs data.
      * A weaker dollar generally boosts gold and commodity prices, making them more affordable for international buyers.
      * Spot gold gained 0.7%, trading at $2,861.22 per ounce as of 6:29 a.m. in London. Meanwhile, silver and platinum also advanced, while palladium declined.

Even before the latest US-China tariffs, the precious metals market was experiencing heightened volatility.

      * Gold and silver prices in the US surged above international benchmarks, leading to a rush of large-scale shipments into the country ahead of potential tariffs.
      * The uncertainty also caused a spike in lease rates for gold and silver, as traders scrambled to secure short-term loans for metals stored in London vaults.
      * Crude oil prices slipped, as global growth concerns stemming from the trade war overshadowed the impact of new US sanctions on Iran.

Always trade with strict risk management. Your capital is the single most important aspect of your trading business.
